The LREMC Scholarship Program awards more than $40,000 annually, and its Bright Ideas Grant Program awards $20,000 annually to public school teachers who propose innovative ideas to enhance teaching and learning. With five existing scholarship programs, education is a priority in a region where agriculture drives the economy. Serving Robeson, Hoke, Scotland and Cumberland counties, LREMC has a long and distinguished history of community outreach, including to UNCP. The scholarship is renewable, and the student or his parents must be LREMC members. Named the Lumbee River EMC Scholars Program, it was initiated with a $5,000 gift.Įarnings from the endowment will fund a scholarship for an outstanding student majoring in biology or environmental science with preference for a student interested in a career in agriculture. In October, LREMC’s Board of Directors ratified an agreement to establish an endowed scholarship at UNCP that will total $25,000 by 2018.
